In this first Kickstart Session…
We dove deep into our 5 Foundations Framework, which is all about personalizing nutrition for our clients to achieve sustainable weight loss and peak performance. Together, we explored how critical it is to control insulin and inflammation—not just calories—for truly lasting results. These foundations will be our focus over the next six weeks, helping you unlock the kind of outcomes that set you apart as a coach. One of the biggest breakthroughs we discussed was the role insulin plays as a gatekeeper to fat loss. If we’re not managing insulin levels properly, it doesn’t matter how well we dial in calories or macros—fat burning comes to a screeching halt. This is why understanding each client’s unique insulin response is the key to unlocking better, more consistent results.
We also talked about Performance-Limiting Factors (PLFs) and how identifying what’s holding our clients back is the first step in building a clear path forward for them. If we can pinpoint those limiting factors and solve them, we’ll set our clients (and ourselves) up for long-term success.
This session wasn’t just about theory, though. We looked at how practical application is key to everything we do as coaches. It’s not enough to just know about insulin or inflammation; it’s about how we apply it with clarity and purpose in our coaching and in our own lives. We need to lead by example.
By the end of this six weeks, my goal is to ensure that each of you has the tools, strategies, and knowledge to confidently deliver results that your clients won’t be able to find anywhere else. Together, we’re going to elevate our coaching, one step at a time.
Key Points:
5 Foundations Framework Introduction: We kicked off by introducing the personalized nutrition approach, focusing on controlling insulin and inflammation to achieve real, lasting results that go beyond just managing calories.
Insulin’s Role in Fat Loss: We uncovered the importance of managing insulin levels as the key to unlocking fat reserves. Without controlling insulin, fat loss becomes a massive uphill battle, no matter how perfect the calories seem.
Performance-Limiting Factors (PLFs): We talked about how crucial it is to identify PLFs in each client. When we solve the right problems, we can lead our clients to success more effectively.
Personalized Coaching: The need to personalize strategies for each client’s specific insulin response was a big takeaway. One-size-fits-all doesn’t work, and we now know how to make tailored plans that deliver better results.
Understanding Tolerance: We discussed how our body’s response to insulin can be compared to building tolerance to alcohol. The more insulin is stimulated, the harder it is for the body to respond properly, which can slow down progress.
Calorie Deficit and Insulin Management: We dove into why it’s essential to balance a healthy calorie deficit with insulin management. If we can strike this balance, we’ll achieve sustainable, quality weight loss for our clients.
Practical Application: It’s not just about learning more—it’s about taking action. We’re not here to just absorb more information; we’re here to implement it and make a real difference in our clients’ lives.

In our latest Carbohydrate Mastery session, we delved into the practical application of low-carb strategies, how they affect not just weight loss but overall health, and the importance of continually adjusting our coaching approach to meet individual client needs. As a team, we explored how reducing carbohydrates can positively impact gut health and stress management, and discussed how sleep, mindfulness, and meditation can help regulate cortisol levels for better overall results.
Together, we emphasized how important it is to focus on more than just the physical—true success comes when we help our clients improve all areas of their lives, including mental health and stress management.
We also touched on specific strategies for guiding clients through nutritional challenges, especially during menopause, where intermittent fasting and low-carb approaches have been particularly helpful. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey, so we must stay flexible and always tailor our coaching based on client feedback and results.
Key Points:
Transitioning to Low Insulin States: We focused on transitioning clients into a low insulin state, which Malcolm has had success with, and how lowering carbs and switching to more complex options like brown rice helped reduce bloating and improve overall health.
Structured Coaching for Better Results: We discussed the importance of having a structured approach, especially when progress stalls. Structure builds trust and consistency in coaching, which is crucial for client retention.
Cortisol and Insulin Connection: We explored how stress and cortisol directly impact insulin production, affecting muscle growth and weight loss. Managing stress is key to regulating insulin and improving results.
Menopause and Nutritional Coaching: We discussed the importance of understanding hormonal changes like menopause when coaching women, especially in terms of fasting and dietary adjustments. Sally Bell's insights into nutritional coaching for menopausal women were especially valuable.
Quick Wins for Client Buy-In: Helping clients achieve quick wins during the fat adaptation process builds trust and ensures they stick to the program. We must give them tangible, fast results early on.
Low-Carb Diets and Insulin Sensitivity: We emphasized the effectiveness of low-carb diets for improving insulin sensitivity, especially in clients with insulin resistance.
Next Steps:
We'll continue focusing on the 50-50 rule, ensuring we combine textbook knowledge with practical, real-world application in our coaching.
Next week, we’ll dive deeper into the macronutrient ratios for ketogenic diets, including specific protein and fat calculations for each client.
Our goal is to guide each client into a fat-adapted state by reducing overall carbohydrate intake over the next four weeks.

In this session, we tackled the role of fasting in optimizing fat loss and improving insulin sensitivity. Together, we discussed the importance of analyzing client results beyond surface-level dietary changes, focusing on underlying issues like sleep deprivation and insulin resistance. I also highlighted how sustainable weight loss strategies, such as intermittent fasting and cold water therapy, can significantly boost results.
We explored how fostering community support in coaching programs helps clients stay accountable and supported, and ultimately how clients desire more than just weight loss—they crave lifestyle transformation. Fasting plays a critical role in enhancing metabolic health, burning fat, and regulating insulin levels, but it needs to be carefully implemented and adjusted for each client.
Key Points:
We emphasized the need to go beyond calorie tracking, analyzing client results for issues like sleep deprivation and its impact on insulin sensitivity.
I highlighted the importance of long-term sustainable weight loss and how tools like cold water therapy can support insulin sensitivity.
We discussed how community support can prevent clients from feeling isolated and encourage better adherence to their programs.
Clients ultimately want lifestyle changes, not just a lower number on the scale—this is why our focus must be on long-term strategies.
The metabolic benefits of intermittent fasting go far beyond simple calorie deficit; it’s about improving insulin sensitivity and promoting fat burning.
We wrapped up by emphasizing how fasting can help with both fat loss and energy levels, and the critical role it plays in improving metabolic health.
Next Steps:
I recommend 16 hours of fasting as the minimum when introducing intermittent fasting to clients, and we’ll explore adjusting meal times to optimize fasting windows.
We’ll also advise on water and salt consumption to mitigate dehydration during fasting, with particular attention to the role of electrolytes.

In today’s session, Callum guided participants through strategies for optimizing sleep, focusing on the impact of sleep deprivation on fat loss, muscle retention, and overall cognitive performance. The masterclass highlighted how optimizing sleep not only benefits client results but also enhances personal productivity and energy levels for trainers.
Key Points:
Impact of Sleep Deprivation: Sleep loss increases inflammation, impairs muscle retention, and negatively affects hormones like testosterone and human growth hormone, essential for recovery and growth.
Circadian Rhythm & Adenosine: Explained the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm) and the role of adenosine in building “sleep pressure” that leads to a natural sleep-wake cycle.
Importance of Cycles Over Hours: Instead of focusing on “8 hours of sleep,” Callum emphasized understanding sleep cycles (usually 90 minutes), with deeper sleep occurring earlier and REM sleep later in the night.
Nutrition and Energy Regulation: Discussed the role of adrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin in energy and motivation. Emphasized how carbohydrate intake timing affects mental clarity and performance.
Caffeine and Alcohol Effects: Detailed how caffeine’s half-life and alcohol’s impact on adenosine can disrupt sleep quality and create lingering grogginess.
Pre-Sleep and Post-Wake Routines: Shared the significance of morning light exposure and managing evening light to support the body’s natural circadian rhythm for optimal sleep.
This masterclass provided a comprehensive framework for understanding sleep science and actionable tips to enhance sleep quality for both personal and client success.
