For years we have been told that it is absolutely vital that we start the day off with breakfast before we leave the house. The majority of the time, the first breakfast option that comes to mind is a bowl of cereal.
But could a breakfast cereal, such as muesli, that is marketed as being "healthy" actually be detrimental to weight loss? Below I lay down the truth on these "healthy" breakfast cereals.
1. Muesli Is High In Carbohydrates
From a weight loss point of view, the most effective way to bring the body out of storage mode and allow access to our body fat stores is to limit carbohydrate intake. Foods such as muesli are high in carbohydrates.
One of the main issues with carbohydrates is that they stimulate the storage hormone insulin. The moment that insulin is stimulated and raised, access to our body fat stores become limited because the body cannot store fat and bring fat out of storage at the same time.
So by starting the day off "correctly" you are actually starting the day off by blocking access to your body fat stores.
Secondly, eating foods high in carbohydrates can lead to additional hunger throughout the day in comparison to fat and protein. This is because we have receptors in the mouth that can detect the incoming carbohydrates. These receptors are linked to the pleasure centre in the brain. As a result, it makes you feel good but also leads you to craving carbohydrates throughout the day. So maybe your bowl of muesli is a reason for why you reach for that bar of chocolate around 3/4 o'clock...

2. Muesli Is Low In Fat
Again, it has been drummed into us that we must limit foods high in fat and eat more low-calorie carbohydrates. But from a weight loss point of view, this is an absolute disaster strategy.
If we look at human evolution, we are programmed to eat other animals (sorry to anyone who is a vegetarian). Hence we are programmed to eat meat and fat. But for some reason, in the 1970's some clever clogs decided that actually, 2 million years of evolution was wrong. We shouldn't be eating meat and fat but actually grains and cereals.

The answer... Never.

3. Muesli Has a 2 Star Rating - Not 1 Star.
Now it isn't all doom and gloom. Hence why muesli cereals have a 2-star weight loss rating over 1-star.
A benefit of choosing muesli over any sugary cereals such as frosties or coco pops is that muesli does consist mainly of low glycemic carbohydrates.
That means that when digested, these carbohydrates take longer to be broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream. As a result, the effect on our blood sugar levels is less and they do not stimulate the fat storage hormone insulin as much. Therefore they are less likely to contribute to weight gain.
